my hero was my mum,my dad lost his job from a nervous breakdown when i was little due to seeing his work mate lose an arm on a lathe.he never worked again.my mum worked all hours god sent to provide food for us and clothe us even taking a job at a club in the evenings.when in turn all 5 children gave her grandchildren she always made time for them helping us all out with food parcels lol and money if we needed it.but the best thing she ever gave us was her love.we lost her 3 years ago to non hodgkinsons and our lives have not been the same since.i was her little mistake lol as she didnt have me till she was 40 yrs old so i was always spoilt being the youngest.so yes my mum was my hero and always will be

Id like to see Billy Connolly in the poll as he has been an inspiration to me in bad times (and good). From a troubled and poor childhood to being a musician/songwriter/comedian to an outright brilliant comedian he never let adversity or circumstance in his own life stop him making people laugh and smile.

there are so many people who I would nominate and i’m sure everyone knows someone, but i think it has got to be my dad, thats my second dad! He is 90 this week and he is the best dad and husband anyone would want. His been through the war, got injured and got medals, he met my mum and took on 6 kids, he brought us up as if we were his own. His been there for me so many times, to many to count, but especially when my daughter died, he did everything, paid for everything when i didnt have a penny, i love him so much.
Now he cares for my mum who cant do anything for herself, he wont let us help him his to proud and he wont let anyone else.He fixes his car he does the decorating cleaning washing cooking, I just dont know how he does it. He even got a computer this year and goes on line, though I cant tempt him yet on here!! still trying though… so if i can nominate anyone it has to be him. He’s my hero!!! and i love him

There are numerous people to nominate.
Researchers, doctors, etc, who have given me 6(& hopefully more) yrs of life.
My youngest grandaughter was 2 months old, when I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I didn’t think i would see her & her brother start school.
Well, i have,& then I was diagnosed with a very rare tumour on my adrenal gland.
Once again I had a life threatening illness, but I got through it.
Life is so precious,we take it for granted, until there is a risk of it being taken away.
So, i would like to nominate, life!

I agree with the family comments, I also have a stepfather that has been there for me over the years, and for that I thank him. But I think Kim Walters and her family are an inspiration to us all. In her time of suffering she allowed the public into her life to raise awareness for breast cancer. Now she has gone, her legassy lives on and the fund raising continues. Hats off to the Walters family.

As well as the marvellous stories above i would like to tell you about a marvellous lady i have met on Facebook by the name of LYN ROE
She has 3 adopted sons whose birth mothers all had alcohol problems whilst pregnant leading to disabilities in the children
The youngest one Ben is 6 years old and also has Downs Syndrome but at the age of 2 just after Lyn adopted him he was also struck by Leukaemia. Despite beating it once he was struck by it again a couple of years ago and at the moment is in remisission. With the type he has is very rare to be struck twice with it !
Lyn campaigns tirelessly to raise awareness of childhood Leukaemia on Facebook and never ever complains.
Ben himself comes across as a gorgeous little boy with a wonderful smile and a loving nature.
If you are on facebook please consider adding lyn as a friend as she is hoping to get Bens page up to 70,000 members by his 7th birthday in november xx
well done lyn you are my hero !!!

Such amazing stories. You roomies are so lucky to have such selfless and giving people who have touched your lives, especially in times of great hardship, adversity and fear.

We should all be blessed to find these sorts of people on hand in our darkest hour and from what I read, they are all my heroes too.

there are many to chose from, family, friends.. but i have to say my partner is my hero. i’ve suffered from bi-polar depression and panic attacks for nearly 7 years, i left school at 15 after my nan had a heart attack to help her with my gramps and my great nan. i slowly became a recluse and lost all my confidence. Then i met ‘him’ at 17, we hit it off instantly and he slowly began picking me up, we moved in together and after 2 and a half years had a beautiful baby girl he has never pressured me to do anything im too scared to do and has supported me financially and emotionally through the good times and the bad. im starting to get my confidence back and am even looking for a job (that prospect even a year ago would have made me erupt in a cold sweat).. i feel as if my life has been flipped upside down and i owe everything to him. my wonderful hero :)

I would like to nominate my son. He has had some really bad physical and mental problems to overcome, he has been bully and ignored but still remains a pleasant well mannered boy who loves to make people laugh

my best friend Pam is my hero, she has been through all kinds of bad luck over the past few years, but she always has time to be there for me. I feel someone who has the backbone, and doggit dertermination to overcome everything life has thrown at her, but can still be there as my surrogate sister, to confide in and to laugh and cry with has to be a hero to me.

i would nominate all the doctors who work hard to try to find a cure for cancer. we have all known people in our familys or circle of friends who have been struck down by this disease i know its hit my family twice in this last couple of years. my auntie is suffering from it and i lost my stepdad to it this summer. hopefully one day in the near future they will be able to get that breakthrough to stop this horrible disease in its tracks.xxx
